Does it help to make your unemployment or underemployment a media story? Maybe not. Last year, like many other media properties such as Abovethelaw.com, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL published the ongoing sagas of those in a search for work. The update shows that the publicity wasn't a game-changer. Three of those featured are still not on their feet financially. They probably will never be back where they were, not in earnings and in title. All suffered.
I tell those I coach: You are your story. You have more control over that story if you keep it private, just promoting the good parts, with yourself as your own public relations representative. What goodies to tell the world about? Among them are publishing an article, winning a contest, or opening a business which is succeeding in unexpected ways.
