"It's luck if you make it big. And when you don't you tend to become bitter. I am watching too many of my fellow Baby Boomers go that side of bitter."
That's what a famous TV director observed. He's starting up a comedic site and was recruiting writers. That's how we bumped into each other. Otherwise our paths were unlikely to have crossed. He's wealthy West Side Manhattan.
So, how can we Baby Boomers who didn't get to the top not turn rancid? One way is simply to start over. Try something that we can excel at. An English literature professor at an Ivy League university didn't make full professor. That wasn't the environment for him. A liberal arts teaching college offered him a ticket. He turned it down. That is, he could have started over but didn't. He seemed to love his pain too much. Eighteen months ago he died, young.
A former colleague in California, where there is an economic depression, lost her good job in public relations. She wasn't at the top but near it. Her partner and her dusted off their MBAs and launched a business serving lawyers specializing in representing those with disabilities. The two just might make it big.
Since we will working into our 80s, if our health holds out, we have every incentive to try out another path.
We all have to stick together...everyone is always talking about Education, helping the poor, spending more money on those who are not willing to work...It's Time to Start taking care of those who have worked all their lives and still have many years left to work. Hire A Baby Boomer.
