Often work, whether as an employee or entrepreneur, is where we're not. In the old days we would sell the house and use the proceeds to start a new life in a more promising location. I did just that in 2001. That, of course, was before the housing crash.
But, there are ways to unload a house. One is to provide seller's financing. Another is to check around and see if a nonprofit or government wants to establish a halfway house or residence for independent living. Usually, halfway houses for substance abusers don't require special zoning since conditions such as alcoholism are recognized by the federal government as disabilities.
