That's the lesson I learned after I got a bee in my bonnet to get a full time job in communications with benefits. Yes, I was already receiving Medicare and Social Security. But after being mostly self employed since 1987, I wanted to be paid for sick days and vacation time and hopefully have the employer kick in to a 401K.
That was not to be. What was palpable, as soon as I entered the room, was that my age was the problem. After enough of that I got it that I better invest my energy and good ideas into operating my communications boutique.
Actually, I now recognize, what I was auditioning for was to be a better marketing and sales rep for my own business. From those interviews, once the interviewer's shock about my age passed, I picked up information about what was selling in the new economy and what prospects were expecting in sale pitches.
Despite the ordeal of seemingly being ruled out because of my age, those interviews became the best investment in my business that I had made since going digital.
