Philip Seymour Hoffman, who had a past history of subtstance abuse and recovery, had a brief relapse. TMZ reports that Hoffman caught it in the bud and was in and out of detox in about 10 days. He's now back working on a movie.
Some of the aging who relapse, though, aren't so fortunate. A 52-year-old man in our 12-step group relapsed. That resulted in his third DUI. He solved that problem by getting drunk again and blowing his brains out. Should 12-step programs stop encouraging the celebrating of anniversaries and just celebrate that day sober? I have to assume that man felt great shame.
