The Wall Street Journal blows up the myths about aging and work. The realities are that there are more of us over-50 in the workforce than there had been in 2002. The actual figures are 33.4% versus 25%. Even if we take a time out for whatever, we can get back in. And we are even changing careers as well as being first-time entrepreneurs.
However, age bias is real. The trick is to shrug that off when it happens, and go on with our search for a job, contract assignment, or business for our enterprise.
The bottom line on being hired is that the organization needs our skills. This is especially the situation in professional services, ranging from law to public relations. Walk in a large law firm or a large public relations agency and there is plenty of gray hair at the top.
