The Drudge Report didn't headline with the death of actor/comic Ricky Harris at age 54. It had done that for both the death of George Michael and the massive heart attack of Princess Leia, that is Carrie Fisher.
The Drudge Report headline today was the strange and scary phenomenon of fights in malls across America. One might describe it as: 'Twas the day after Christmas and all through the malls .... Here is the coverage in the Daily Mail which the Drudge Report links to.
Some speculate that the outbreak of petty violence might have been coordinated by social media. The large number of malls involved would argue against the phenomenon being pure coincidence. This didn't seem to be the traditional sharp elbows hunting for bargains.
The question then becomes who were the organizers and what was their objective or objectives.
For insight we might reach back in time to the counterculture during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Radicals such as Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman organized street theatre. Mostly that was through person-to-person word of mouth. The landline telephone was the medium.
The motivation was to deliver messages to The Establishment. Those ranged from stop the war in Viet Nam to end conspicuous consumption. No one needed a new car every two years.
Many of the fights in parts of the malls such as food courts were started by youth.
Perhaps Generation Z and the youngest of Generation Y are struggling to simply be noticed. With the extremely wealthy poised to run America for the next four years, those under-30 might feel left out of the American Dream. During the counterculture the meme was not to trust anyone over-30.
Could the new cultural war in America be the standard youth versus those with official power?
As the week goes on, we may know more.
