We over-50 grew up in the scientific age. We learned the scientific method and that kind of painstaking analysis, along with the critical thinking we picked up in Freshman Composition, was the way we were to approach whatever. Analysis was rewarded. Intuition ignored. Solutions rare. Just think about those of us who experienced psychoanalysis and didn't perceive much if any gain.
Now, some respected voices out there are providing documentation that the focus should be on the solution, not exhaustively digging for all the possible causal factors. Two of those voices are the Heath Brothers who had brought us "Made To Stick" a few years ago. Next month their book "Switch" will be published. It demonstrates that searching for the solution and applying it change generate big impacts. Excerpts from the book are in the February edition of FAST COMPANY.
When our careers get stuck, let's put our energy into getting unstuck, not figuring out how we got into that pickle. The solution might be as simple as grabbing a survival job to pull us out of the past into a present that can be a platform for the future. The cliche is true: Nothing gets us a job like a job.
