All the time, folks who disliked other folks labeled them a "lowlife," just as U.S. president Donald Trump has Omarosa. Here is the media coverage of that bit of rhetorical theatrics.
From the get-go in his appearance on the political stage, Trump has strategically leveraged the language of The Old Neighborhood. Maybe he heard it when growing up in Queens and recognized its power. That stuck with him. He may have decided to try it out. He did. And it was a hit.
Those in The Old Neighborhood striving to enter or being pushed into the middle class learned how to converse in an indirect, euphemistic style. The term "lowlife" became "troubled." And, those doing that transition frequently lost their ability to connect with other human beings.
Maybe that's why so many found Trump's directness engaging. It gave them permission to return to plain-speaking.
