There is the gallows humor around New York City: As long as the rats stay in the basement, things are under control.
Well, as the New York Post reports, that control has been lost. Rats as big as bunnies are dominating the lives of the (human) Fat Cats on Manhattan's Upper West Side, as well as Central Park. The rats cruise the sidewalks and streets. Inside, they can be heard scratching behind the walls. In addition, they gnaw through the car engine wires, producing big fix-it bills for residents.
For those optimistic that the problem can be prevented, here is a how-to sponsored by the City Health Department and Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal.
Of course, there is a great deal of speculation as to why the usual rat situation has spiraled to the point of unmanageability.
Here are some of the theories:
- Outdoor dining
- Increased homelessness
- Lax street cleaning
- Delayed garbage pick-up.
Will rats accelerate the flight from New York City of the wealthy? If so, there goes the tax base. With them can also be transported those good jobs out of the Big Apple. The guys and women who can do the hiring can simply set up shop something else. Think the new location as being a ranch in Wyoming. Will ambitious new college graduates head for the ranches instead of Manhattan to start a career?
